W. J. "Dub" Rhodes, born in Bluff Dale Texas on October 8, 1919, moved to Brownwood to work after graduating from Bluff Dale High School. It was here that he met and married Anne Elizabeth Welch on December 5, 1941.

Later, he entered the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II and went ashore as a truck driver with the first units at the Battle of Iwo Jima. After his return from World War II, Dub graduated from the Brownwood Business College and majored in accounting and business. He worked as an accountant and at Lampkin Brothers as the plant manager for several years.

He left this job to start his own home construction business which he operated for about thirty years. He continued to be involved in caring for the construction repairs and collection of rent on several homes he owned in North Brownwood until his eyesight grew so bad that he had to completely retire. After Anne's death in 1997, he moved to an apartment to be closer to his daughters and their families. W. J. Rhoades was the son of Bryan and Lola Rhoades and was the oldest of his four siblings, Glenn, Raymond, Billie Joe and Patsy Moody.
