A funeral for former McMinnville veterinarian Sanford E. Davis of Mount Angel will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville. The Rev. Steve Ross of the McMinnville United Methodist Church will officiate. Private family interment will be in Howell Prairie Cemetery, Silverton.

The funeral home will be open for visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Davis died May 16, 2002, in the Benedictine Care Facility, Mount Angel. He was 84.

He was born March 30, 1918, in Silverton, the son of William G. and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Davis. He was raised and educated in Hazelgreen. He graduated from Silverton High School.

He attended Willamette University and Oregon State University, then completed his veterinary studies at Washington State University, Pullman.

He was a practicing veterinarian in Stayton and Grants Pass before he entered the Army during World War II. After completing his military service, he had a veterinary practice in Salem.

He and Alice were married Oct. 16, 1942.

He opened the Davis Animal Clinic in McMinnville on Oct. 7, 1947. He belonged to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 1283, McMinnville, Knights of Pythias and Michelbook Country Club, McMinnville. He was a former member of the Yamhill County Sheriff's Posse.

He also belonged to the American Veterinary Medical Association and Oregon Water Colors Society. He enjoyed photography, watercolor painting and hunting. He moved to the care center in Mount Angel in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Davis-Wolfe of McMinnville; three sons, Gordon Davis of Oregon City, Scott Davis of Portland and Steven Davis of Sparks, Nev.; two sisters, Wilma Donaldson of Lake Oswego and Helen Irelan of Wilsonville; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1995.
