The family lived at 1015 South Fourth Street, near what is now Baylor University property, and attended Seventh and James Baptist Church. She graduated from Waco High School in 1941. She met her husband, Leon J. Burton, at R.E. Cox Company, where both worked for many years. They married Aug. 15, 1963, at St. Alban's Episcopal Church. Mary Jean served as a faithful member of St. Alban's the rest of her life. She loved her church and invested herself in its life as a leader and worker.
Mary Jean loved her family and especially enjoyed granddaughters Kristy, Dana, and Kate. She liked eating with family, working word puzzles, and playing cards and dominoes. She enjoyed bookkeeping for her various church groups and for her friend, Dr. Robert Barkley. Many dear friends through the years have included those from The Class of '41, Cox's Department Store, her "First Graders" lunch pals, card and domino friends, and the women of St. Alban's.

She is survived by her son, John Dane Burton and wife, Laura, of Waco; her granddaughters, Kristyn Denise, Dana Lauren and Leah Kate; and her sister, Rachel Fritsch.
