William Joseph Matthies Sr. passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home in Everett, WA on May 12, 2017. He leaves behind his two children (with Sue Iverson); son, Joe Matthies (William Joseph Matthies Jr.); his daughter, Jessica (Scott) Johnson; granddaughter, Allie Johnson; sister, Kim Matthies; brother, Ted Matthies; and longtime companion, Tamara Mason. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews, and his lifelong friends of which he thought very highly of. He was preceded in death by his parents, Darrell and Donna Matthies; his grandparents, Joseph and Sylvia Riley; his brother, Gene Matthies; his sister, Linda Oakes; and his brother, Jeff Matthies.

Bill (aka Willy) was born in Everett on January 29, 1947. He graduated from Everett High School in 1965, and the University of Washington in 1970. He remained a Husky fan throughout his life and enjoyed taking his son to Husky football games. He made many lifelong friends from high school (especially the class of '65 and the EHS poker group), the UW and enjoyed telling tales about their friendships. Bill was known and loved by many in the community most likely because when he met you, you felt like you had been friends forever. He could remember every one of his friends' birthdays and other special events. He truly enjoyed meeting and knowing people. His love for people was equally matched with his love for animals. He would take in any animal and really enjoyed his "ranch" out in Arlington, WA. He had built a log home out of trees from the property and dug out a pond to give the water a place to go from the swampy land that was there. He turned the land into his version of an oasis. It was there that he was able to have many dogs, goats, llamas and even a goose named Jordan. His career choices were perfect for his people-person personality. They included working in real estate, salesman at Everett Datsun, Sales Manager at Klein Honda, and owner of his own insurance business through Farmers. Bill enjoyed acting and singing which landed him key roles in local theaters, bit pieces in a couple of movies and singing at the Sydney Opera House with a Barber Shop quartet. He was also chosen to be in the Rose Bowl Parade on the Farmer's Insurance float back in 1992. He also loved playing Santa Claus locally for several years. Memorial donations can be made to: Everett Animal Shelter, 333 Smith Island Rd., Everett, WA 98201
