Ruth Evelyn Payne, age 89, of Glasgow, peacefully passed from natural causes at Hospice of Southern Kentucky in Bowling Green, Wednesday, April 17, 2024, and departed for her heavenly home. Ruth was the oldest of five children of the late Raymond G. Arterburn and the late Ermine Evelyn Arterburn of Flippin, Kentucky, where she grew up.

In her youth, Ruth was a class leader at Indian Creek Baptist Church and served in home missions (VBS) during summers with the Monroe Baptist Association. She was an honor student and graduate of Gamaliel High School and attended Campbellsville College on scholarship. After exploring the nursing profession as a "candy striper" at T. J. Samson Community Hospital with her sister, Ruby, Ruth was subsequently employed at the Baptist Bookstore in Louisville, Kentucky, for several years before returning, in 1965, to marry Russell D. Payne of Roseville, Kentucky. Thereafter, Ruth became an active member of the Barren County Homemakers Club and Dover Baptist Church. She was for decades the effective bookkeeper for Payne's Garage and Hubcap City at Roseville, a widely- supported local business operated by her husband until Russell became ill and passed in 2001.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Leah Nicole Payne; stepson, Gary Doyel; a sister, Reva Sue Hays (David), and two brothers, Kenneth Ray Arterburn (Bonnie) and Charles Royce Arterburn; a sister-in-law, Shirley Payne (Rondall) and brother-in-law, William Earl Bowles (Vernell); several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

In addition to her parents Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Russell D. Payne; their only child, a son, Glendon Daryl Payne; and her sister, Ruby Levon Ferg (Albert).

Ruth was a cheerful soul who enjoyed her extended family and many friends even as her memory continually faded; she will be missed. In lieu of flowers, expression of sympathy and condolences will be kindly appreciated through contributions to Poplar Log Cemetery, (c/o Gerry Bowman, 530 Poplar Grove Road, Summer Shade, KY 42166).

The funeral service for Ms. Payne will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, April 21st at A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in the Poplar Log Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 12:00 PM until time for the service at the funeral home.
