Vera L. Clay
Vera L. Clay, 77, of Sioux City died Friday, July 5, 2002, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Riverside United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Wood officiating. Burial will be in McCook Cemetery in North Sioux City. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. today, with family present, at Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel.
Mrs. Clay was born Nov. 6, 1924, in Sioux City, the daughter of Clyde and Ruth (McKim) Holmes. She was a lifetime resident of the Sioux City area. She was a graduate of Central High School.
She married E. Gene Clay on Jan. 17, 1941, in South Sioux City. She later married Joe Engle. She was a beautician by trade and also was the manager for several area businesses.
She loved her family and grandchildren, playing cribbage and her many dogs. She was an avid reader. Her compassion showed through by the way she helped people even before herself.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Jack and Delilia Clay, Terry and Nan Clay, and Gerald (Sonny) and Deb Clay, all of Sioux City; a sister, Geraldine Todd of California; eight grandchildren, Kenny and his wife, Missy, Lori, Pam and her husband, Mark, Connie and her husband, Craig, Jerry and his wife, Trisha, Rob and his wife, Kelly, Jenny and her husband, Dave, and Brad and his wife, Jennifer; 19 great-grandchildren, Bubba, Bronco, Candi, Cayla, Cory, Jake, Marrisa, Molly, Makayla, Ericka, Kara, Taylor, Andrew, Elizabeth, Cody, Collin, Logan, Amanda and Lauren; and special friends, Evelyn Plueger and Pauline Harris.
She was preceded in death by both of her husbands; her parents; a brother, Dennis; and two sisters, Ardyce and Doris.
