Robert Hunter GARTHRIGHT, M.D., a successful practicing physician and sergeon, at Vinton, Roanoke County, Virginia, where he has been located since 1889, is recognized as a man of marked ability in his profession, and is regared as one of the most prominent citizens of that flourishing town.
Dr. Garthright was born in Henrico County, Virginia, April 4, 1858, and is a
son of Edward Finch and Caroline F. (Scully) GARTHRIGHT, being of both English adn Irish extraction. Dr. Garthright grew to manhood in his native county, and after leaving public school took a more comprehensive course in the virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Young Garthright then took up the study of medicine, having decided to make a physician of himself. He enterd the Medical College of Virginia, at Richmond, and graduated in 1885. He immediatel began the practice of his profession as house physician of the Eastern States Hospital, at Williamsburg. He subsequently practiced six months in Fluvanna County, two years in Princess Ann County adn one year in York County. Dr. GARTHRIGHT won the orator's medal at the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical Cllege in 1878. He is the author of a number of articles on various medical subjects, publishedin various medical journals. He is ex-president of the Roanoke Medical Society. He originally began the study of law, but abandoned it for medicine. In 1889 Dr. GARTHRIGHT removed to Vinton, which has been his home ever since, and where he has a large and lucrative practice. July 27, 1887, he was joined in marriage with Fanny L. HOWARD, a daughter of Rev. John W. and Fanny (PHILLIPS) HOWARD, of Virginia. Dr and Mrs. GARTHRIGHT have two children, Edith H. and Edward F. The family are regular attendants of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, of which both parents are members. Fraternally, the subject of this sketch is a member of Vinton Lodge, No. 204, A.F.&A.M. and of Mount Hermon Lodge. No 95, I.O.O.F. He is also a valued Member of the Roanoke County Medical Society, and of the Virginia State Medical Association. He has served as councilman of Vinton adn in his political preferences takes sides with the Democratic Party.
