Stephen may have been the son of James M. Wyman and Elizabeth McGann, as in many trees, but if he was he wasn't in the 1850 Weston, VT census with them or he was incorrectly listed as Simon Wyman. He had an older brother Joseph and both were born in NY. So this is probably his correct parents. Others list his parents as Stephen Wyman and Atlanta Houghton, but this is incorrect as their son Stephen D. Wyman married Melvina F Houghton in 1867 in Chester, VT.

On Aug 2, 1862 at Saxon River, VT he enlisted to serve in the Civil War. His service was credited to Westminster, VT. On Sep 30, 1862 he mustered in to Co. A 3rd Regiment Vermont Infantry. He was wounded on May 5, 1864 in The Battle of the Wilderness with a GSW to the left shoulder and contusions to the right shoulder, he was admitted to the hospital on the 13th. He was discharged February 22, 1865 with ¾ disability status.

On Jun 24, 1866 in Mt. Rutland, VT he married Mary Margaret Fuller, daughter of David A. Fuller and Laura A. Smith.

Their children born between July 29, 1866 and Mar 26, 1883 were Henry Harrison, Justina Alvina, Christine, James, Melvina Carrie, Susan Angela, Rose Laura, Ruth Nellie, Ella Bertha, and Paul Ernest (he was the one born Mar 26, 1883).

Meanwhile on April 11, 1882 in Keene, NH he married Harma Adel Strong, daughter of Peter Strong and Ellen Rock. He listed it as his 1st marriage. (He was still married to Mary).

They had an unnamed son on Mar 11, 1883 in Weston, VT. He was murdered by his father on the day he was born.

Vermontgenealogy.org lists that child as: Illegitimate son of Stephen WYMAN and Mary STRONG (Murdered by father): Son no name b. Mar 11, 1883 d. Mar 11, 1883. (They were married, although he was a bigamist).

There were many newspaper articles of the trial, the bigamy, beating of his children, etc. He was arrested for this murder in 1883 and on Jun 13, 1884 he was committed to the Vermont State Prison with a life sentence for Murder in the 2nd Degree.

He served 18 years of that sentence before Governor McCullough pardoned him on Dec 3, 1902 saying "He was a Veteran of the Civil War and still suffering from a wound received in the Battle of the Wilderness. His health is completely broken." One account said "he had been a good soldier". Many felt this was not a good excuse for pardoning him. After his pardon he received $12 a month in a Civil War pension (that is equivalent to $357 today).

Sadly on Aug 13, 1884 his 1st wife, Mary (Fuller) Wyman hung herself in her home in Andover, VT. The newspaper account said that since her husband was sentenced she had become insane.

I have not been able to find Adel (Strong) Wyman since the marriage record. Some list that she died after 1889, but no one put up any records to back up that reasoning.

He died on Dec 9, 1903 in Lancaster, NH.
