Col. John Gayle was born at his father's Tusculum Plantation on Monie Creek in Somerset Co, MD. He married twice. First to Milcah Hill (b. ABT 9 May 1702 in Anne Arundel, Maryland, d. 1765 or 4/24/1744 in Somerset Co, MD. She was a daughter of Henry Hill and Mary Denwood. Col. John Gayle and Milcah Hill were first cousins. Milcah Hill's mother was a sister of Elizabeth "Betty" Denwood who was John Gale's mother. Milcah's 2nd husband was Rev. Thomas Airey, rector of Christ Church, Cambridge, Dorchester County (b: 1701 in Kendal, Yorkshire, England, d. ABT 20 Oct 1765 in Dorchester Co, MD) Thomas Aireys's 1st wife was Elizabeth Pitt.
