Mary Catherine was born August 3, 1836 in Carroll County, Arkansas to William and Mary Emeline Wade Ramsey. She was the fourth of nine children. Her oldest sibling, name unknown, died in infancy. Her remaining brothers and sisters were John J., Emeline, William, Samuel P., Martha, Benjamin Franklin, and Kansas.

She married James Henry Owens on August 11, 1853 in Newton County, Arkansas and together they had 12 children: John William, Martha Emeline, twins Eugene and Eugenah (both of whom passed away at birth in 1858), Mary "Mollie" Permelia, James Edwin, Charles Franklin, Katy Elizabeth, Allie B., Bartley Duff, Minnie Gertrude, and Kancey Ella.

After the Civil War broke out, the family was living in Tarrant County, Texas and James enlisted in the Confederate States Army on February 25, 1862 in Dallas, Texas. After his discharge, James returned to Johnson County, Texas where he resumed farming and he and Mary Catherine built the rest of their family.

Mary Catherine passed away December 2, 1881 in Johnson County, Texas and is buried at the Pleasant Point Cemetery. She was 45 years of age.
