RAPID CITY - Funeral service was held Jan. 23 in the First United Methodist Church for David W. Vance, 88, who died Jan. 20. Burial was at Deadwood.

A native of Sterling, Ill., Vance came as a young man to the Huron area to farm and do construction work. In 1935 he moved to Deadwood where he was also in construction. In 1941 he moved to Rapid City and established the Rapid Tent and Awning Co., later Vance's Tent and Awning Co. He retired in 1973.

He is survived by his widow, Frances, Rapid City; five sons, Lester of Riverside, Calif., Kenneth of Aberdeen, Darold and Cyril of Beaver Dam, Wis., David Jr. of Los Angeles; three daughters, Myrtle Chapman and Viola Carpenter, Huron and Laura Janes, Rapid City; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, one daughter, three sisters and one brother.
