Vernon W. Whitmire, 81, of Berwick passed away on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Born on Dec. 19, 1937, in Berwick, he was a son of the late Warren W. and Zella (Schultz) Whitmire. He attended Berwick area schools. Vernon enlisted in the United States military and served honorably from April 11, 1955, to April 10, 1963. After the service, he worked construction, driving truck for Royal Swan and C&M Springs, and he retired from Kawneer Corporation.
Vernon attended United Methodist Church of Summerhill. He loved to go horseback riding and show quarter horses and he enjoyed being a farrier/blacksmith. He was a family man who loved spending as much time as possible with his family. He liked to vacation with his wife. They especially enjoyed visiting the western towns of the United States.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Helen “Pat” (Reese) Whitmire, Berwick; children: Vernon T. Whitmire and wife Noreen, Berwick, Bradley Whitmire and companion Richard Magoch, Walden, N.Y., Cindy May, Berwick; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. He was looking forward to another one in the spring. He is survived by his brothers: Kenneth Whitmire and wife Carol, Berwick, Willis Whitmire and wife Sandy, Berwick, Nelson “Elmer” Whitmire and wife Sharon, Berwick, Dennis Whitmire and wife Erica, Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Melissa Whitmire.
At his request there will be no public services.
