Alton worked for the Texaco Refinery in Port Arthur, Texas as a machinist for most of his life. The family lived in Woodville but he would drive to Port Arthur during the week where he would stay with his sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Dudley Miller.
After his wife's death in 1974, he continued to live in Woodville for 15 more years. Alton Philen died on July 10, 1989 and was buried in the Ebony Cemetery. Anna, who had been buried in the Woodville Cemetery, was moved by the chilren sometime in the 1990's to the Ebony Cemetery so she could be next to her husband and near their daughter, Marilyn.
