Loving mother, caring friend and skilled physician, who was among the first African-American female anesthesiologists in the United States. Shirley was born the sixth of seven children to L. Curtis Larkins, M.D. and Flora McCree Larkins. She was a proud graduate of Spelman College, class of 1958, and followed a long legacy of Spelman alumnae, including her mother, her aunts and four older sisters. After her matriculation at Spelman, the legacy continued with Shirley's cousin her niece, her daughter and her granddaughter.

Shirley went on to graduate from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, and earn credentials as an anesthesiologist. She served as a staff anesthesiologist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, before moving to California. She enjoyed learning and in spite of an established career in the Bay Area, she took time out to acquire subspecialty training in pediatric anesthesiology and ophthalmic anesthesiology. She continued to practice in the Bay Area for over forty years.

Shirley was married to the late Albert Green, M.D. To their union were born five children. Shirley traveled with her husband and children extensively and lived several years with her family in Senegal, West Africa, where she worked alongside Albert during his service in the Peace Corps. Many years later, she served on a medical mission to The Philippines.

Shirley was a devoted mother and supporter to an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. An independent person by nature, she encouraged educational pursuits in her family and in others. She established the Albert J. Green Memorial Scholarship at Meharry Medical College, and with her siblings established the Jacqueline L. Crook Music Award at Spelman College. Spelman honored Shirley with the Spelman Spirit Award in 2009, for her service to the community and her dedication to the school.

At age 81, the world lost a truly phenomenal woman. Shirley will be most remembered for "being there;" she would often surprise close and extended family members by going out of her way to attend graduations, weddings and other special occasions, even when theses events took place out-of-town, across the country, or overseas.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Albert, brother Curtis: sisters Josephine Pattillo, Lyda Ruth Stivers, and son Ronald Green. She is survived by her children Dwane Green, Kenneth Green, Patrick Green and Judith Green Dones (Michael); sisters Jacqueline Crook and Otha Anne Larkins, and brother Alvin Larkins, M.D.: grandchildren, Lauren Dones and Jason Dones, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal."
