US Congresswoman. A member of the Democratic Party, she served the State of Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1975 until 1995. Born Rachael Marilyn Laird, she studied at the University of Alabama and later Shorter College in Georgia, prior to becoming the proprietor of a radio station in Dalton, Georgia. When her husband news journalist Mort Lloyd was killed in a plane crash during his campaign for Congress in 1974, she succeeded him and was elected after defeating the incumbent, Congressman E. Lamar Baker. During her tenure, she was a member of the House Science Committee, the Committee on Public Works, the Armed Services Committee and the House Select Committee on Aging. Additionally, she cosponsored the Mammography Quality Standards Act following her diagnosis of breast cancer which she was able to overcome.
