George Frederick Reyling emigrated from Germany (Frankfort-am-Main; Hesse) to Australia some time prior to 1848, and naturalised as a citizen of New South Wales in 11 October 1852, as is clear from the Naturalisation Order granted by Sir Arthur Stephen CJ on 11 October 1852. He was about 30 years of age at this stage. GFR was a tailor, the son of Franz Anton Reyling of Frankfort-am-Main, also a tailor.

We can be sure GFR was in Sydney NSW prior to 1848, as it was in that year he married Bridget Mullens (sometimes Mullins) in Sydney. His date at marriage is given as 26 (though on his Death Certificate it is 28), while his age on the application for Naturalisation in NZ is given as 58. His age at death is given as 68 on his NZ death certificate.

There is therefore an error somewhere, and this results in a range of dates of birth for GFR between 1820 and 1826. On balance he is likely to have been born in 1822 - GFR would remember his own age at his marriage, while he may simply have done his maths wrong when filling in the Naturalisation Application in NZ. The age at marriage on his Death Certifcate would have been filled in by a witness who may have estimated GFR's age.

GFR moved from NSW to Greymouth NZ some time during 1866 as is clear from his Application for Naturalisation as a NZ citizen, granted 12 September 1884, in which he states he has been resident in Greymouth for 18 years (though 16 years is also mentioned as a residence period in the application papers, again perhaps just an error).

In summary, GFR seems to have arrived in NSW from Frankfort-am-Main aged no more than 26 - 28 (and probably rather younger). He married in Sydney in 1848, probably aged 26. 18 years later, in 1866, he and his wife Bridget Reyling and their family emigrated to Greymouth, New Zealand. 18 years later in 1884, GFR naturalized as a NZ citizen and he later died in Greymouth on 22 July 1893, a respected member of the community if the obits in the Grey River Argus are anything to go by. His wife Bridget had died in Greymouth on 5 November 1870.
