MATTOON - The funeral for James Dan Gates was Thursday at Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor Brian Miller officiating. Burial with Military Honors by the V.F.W. Post 4325 followed in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Those members participating were detail commander: Dana Denny; chaplain: Larry Owen; buglers: Bill Newton and Bill Miller; honor guard: Ron Smith, Geno Espe, Tuny Cox, John Protz, Scott Buesking, Bill Nash, and Cliff Roling. Recorded selections played included "You're My Best Friend" and "The Rose" by Don Williams. Pallbearers were Nic and Jacob Gates, Toby Ferris, Jamie Johnson, Dan Wildman, and Harold Newlin. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Tomlin and Steve Hughes. Mr. Gates, 90, of Mattoon died Feb. 29, 2008, at Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home.
