Betty Jean Young, the daughter of Albert and Emma (Rostermundt) Umland, was born July 20, 1930, in Manning, Iowa and died May 27, 2018, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 7 days.

Betty was baptized as a child. She attended rural schools near Manning then helped at home for several years.

On June 20, 1948 she was united in marriage to Thomas Edward Young at the Methodist Church in Manning, Iowa. Over the years they were blessed with three children Terry, Jack and Cindy. They helped Tom’s father farm in the Viola, Iowa area and near Coon Rapids, Iowa area. They grew row crops and raised livestock for many years until they retired from farming in 1959. They moved to Lohrville, Iowa for a short time and then lived in Lake City, Iowa before returning to Audubon. During this time Betty was a home maker raising the children and caring for Tom. While living in Audubon, Betty washed and ironed clothes and cleaned houses for several families. Later she worked for Jung’s Bakery for several years until the business closed. Betty then helped her husband operate his painting business until they retired. Tom died May 20, 2010. Betty lived in her own home until she moved to the Friendship Home in September of 2017.

Betty had been a member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon where Betty and Tom serviced as custodians for several years. Betty loved to go to garage sales, embroidery, and making quilts. She made a special quilt for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed watching TV and spending time with her family.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Tom; her parents; her brothers and sisters: Viola and husband, Harold Jorgensen, Virgene Andersen, LaVerne and husband, Bob Wailes, Merlin Umland and Willis Umland; her sisters-in-law Marjorie and husband, Bill Warren, Janet and husband, Ralph Hargens, and Geraldine and husband, Stanley S. Hansen.

Survivors include her children: Terry and wife, Roxanne, Jack, and Cindy and husband, Cal; her grandchildren: Tina, Tony and Katie, Troy and Annie, Chris and wife, Amanda, Aaron and wife, Jessica, Sarah, Daren and wife, Paula and Jerica and husband, Nick; her great-grandchildren: Devin, Leslie, Brittany, Ryan, Shelby, Anthony, Trent, Ava, Lainey, Shayle, Brooklyn, Mattie, Hayley, Kaelyn, Nola, Dempsey and Emma; five great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Barbara and husband, Larry; her sisters-in-law, Joy and Thelma; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Rachel Bawden on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. The family will meet with friends Thursday morning, May 31, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa.
