Virginia Marie Aberle, 97, died on May 15, 2018, in Anchorage, Alaska, in the care of hospice.
Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at the Providence Horizon House, 4140 Folker Street, Anchorage, AK 99508.
Virginia was born on Oct. 7, 1920, in Detroit, Mich., to Alice and Arthur Riss. Already fearless in her young age, she managed to track down two robbers on her bicycle and was recognized locally for her accomplishment. She joined the work force as a teenager to help fill the depleted ranks during World War II and, after high school, went on to attend business school.
Upon graduation, she took a position in Washington, D.C., working at the Pentagon, and it was there that she met and married a Navy pilot, Daniel Aberle. Sometime later, the couple was transferred to Oregon and stayed for a short time until Daniel was discharged from the military. A move closer to family brought them to Pasadena, Calif., where they started a family and Virginia worked as a secretary while raising her four children.
During that time, Virginia was always involved with her children's activities. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Campfire Leader and the president of PTA. While the children were young, the couple decided to move to the mountains of Big Bear Lake, Calif., where Virginia and Dan worked, despite adversity, to start the Snow Summit Ski Lodge. It is now one of the largest Ski Resorts in California.
She enjoyed the outdoors and loved to take camping trips with her children. As her children grew into adulthood and began moving to Alaska, Virginia began to take opportunities to travel all over the world. She loved to visit Europe, Rome in particular, and also ventured to the Middle East. Upon retiring, she chose to pursue her love of family and the outdoors and followed her children to Alaska. Always the adventurer, Virginia enjoyed taking advantage of Alaska's more rugged activities as she went white-water rafting, fishing and camping. She also became involved in the activities and education of her grandchildren, as well as working with the Senior Resource Center. It was nine years ago that she became a resident of the Providence Horizon House, where she was always busy with activities. Virginia loved to read and paint and was a lover of music.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Daryl Lynn Aberle; her daughter-in-law, Marianne Aberle; her grandson, Daniel Aberle; granddaughter and husband, Christine and Dan Stelly; and her great-grandchildren, Alerick and Garin Aberle, and Scarlet and Sabrina Stelly.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Alice and Arthur Riss; her brother, Edward Riss; her former husband and friend, Daniel Aberle; and her three sons, Willian, Edward and David Aberle.
