Richard Braxton "Luke" Lucas, 67, of Conover, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018.

He is son of the late Fred Matthews and Louise Childs Lucas, and was preceded in death by a brother, William Lucas and sister, Jane Opengari.

Luke was a graduate of James River High School of Buchanan, Va. He attended and graduated from Oral Roberts University on a basketball scholarship in Tulsa, Okla.

He worked for J & S Trucking Company of Lexington, N.C., for six years, worked for Caldwell Freight Lines of Lenoir for 25 years, and for Sunbelt Express for five years in Hickory.

He was loved by all who met him and had a "fun loving" personality. Customers and trucking associates knew him as "big shorty".

Luke is survived by his wife, Lana Taylor Lucas of Conover; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Larry Blair of Pell City, Ala., Martha and Don Hanger of Churchville, Va., Nancy Davis of Richmond, Va., Peggy Waldron of Salem, Va.; brothers and sister-in-law, Fred Lucas of Fincastle, Va., Robert Lucas of Fincastle, Va., David and Sandra Lucas of Daleville, Va.; many nieces & nephews also survive.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 12, at Petunia Christian Church, 2420 Lee Hwy., Wytheville, VA 24382, with interment to follow at West End Cemetery in Wytheville, Va.

The family will receive friends Monday, Feb. 12, from 1 p.m. until the service time at the church.
