Oluf is a son of Lars Olsen (1820-1892) and Maren Olsdatter (1813-1873). He has an older sister, Sophie, who died in 1855. He immigrated to America by himself in the 1870s.

Oluf was married Ane Christine Danielson on December 23, 1885 in Logan, Utah. They became parents to fifteen children: Sophia, Christian, George, Elnora, Lars, Pearl, Edward, Rose, Henry, Alice, Orson, Merrill, June, Hershel, and Ray. They all lived to adulthood.

Oluf worked as a rural mail carrier for the US Post Office.
