William enlisted for service in the town of Green, Mahoning county, OH on Aug. 22, 1862. He was mustered into service as a private in the 125th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on Sept. 16, 1862, at Camp Cleveland, OH.
He was wounded on May 9, 1864 in the Battle of Rocky Face Ridge. He was wounded again on May 14, at the Battle of Resaca, GA, ultimately dying of his wounds on May 19, 1864, at Resaca, GA. Records indicate that he was buried in the Chattanooga cemetery.

Although his name appears on most documents as Dickson, many Army Civil War records spell his name as Dixon.
