Born January 3rd, 1929 in Chanute, Kansas. His father, Paul Whiffen was a dentist and his mother, Helen, was a school teacher. The family moved to San Angelo, Texas while he was young. In later years they moved to Ft. Worth, where he attended Paschall High School and served as drum major in the band. He later attended Texas Christian University before moving on to the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, where he worked his way through school in the meat-packing industry. He served a time in the United States Navy before accepting a commission in the United States Army Reserve. Captain Whiffen practiced optometry in the military and in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he met Jane Frances Didier. They were married in August of 1959 at Our Lady of Lourdes in New Orleans. They settled in Alexandria, Louisiana and had three children, Steve, Wendy, and Donna. The family eventually moved to Dallas, Texas, where Dr. Whiffen practiced optometry well into his 80s. Jane passed away in January of 2012, and Dr. Whiffen followed her quietly into the arms of Our Lord, on November 14, 2017, aged 88. He is survived by his three children, and seven grandchildren Jonathan, Brooks, Candace, Cameron, Chelsea, Christian, and Megan, as well as great grandchildren Zephyr, Claire, and Skyler.
