William R. "Bill" Anderson Sr., 80, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away in his home on Sunday, February 3, 2008, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born February 8, 1927, in Rockford, the son of Leroy and Katherine (Marcus) Anderson.

Bill attended Rockford Central High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Bill and Betty Jane Altendorf were married April 30, 1949, in Rockford, by the Most Rev. Arthur J. O'Neill. Betty passed away on November 18, 2007.

Bill worked many different jobs to support his family, most recently at Chrysler Corp., retiring as a night shift supervisor of Data Processing in 1987 after 20 years.

He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. As a young man, Bill was in barbershop quartets and other singing groups. He loved to sing and entertain and was often asked impromptu at parties and events to get up and sing.

Bill loved spending time with his family, and because he loved music, some of his fondest memories were of family and neighborhood get-togethers that became sing-a-longs.

He was always a faithful Bears fan even though they occasionally frustrated him. When he was still able, he played golf many times a week and one of the highlights of his life was a hole-in-one at Macktown golf course.

Bill also enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially recent fishing trips to Kentucky Lake.

He is survived by: children, Steven (Trina), Craig (Lin), Alan (Mike), Colleen (Brett) Jones, and William R. Jr. (Carrie); grandchildren; siblings, Betty Jane "Bettie" Beksel, Richard (Madeline) Anderson, Donna (Gene) DePesa and Kathleen (Jeff); sister-in-law, Marie Anderson; brother-in-law, Robert (Karen) Altendorf.

He was predeceased by: parents; wife: son, Michael; grandson, Brendan; sister, Elaine; brother, Leroy "Andy";

Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, February 8, 2008, in St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.
