Mrs. Melvin Hayes Amos, 91, formerly of High Point, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016. She was born in Canton, the daughter of Melvin A. and Sallie DeVault Hayes. She graduated from High Point Central High in 1942 and attended High Point College. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Kenner Amos. She had been a resident of Hillcrest Dr. in High Point for 48 years before moving to her Holden Beach home that she and her husband built in 1959.
Mrs. Amos was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church where she served as Circle leader and on other committees. She was active in the Girl Scouts, serving as a scout leader and president of the Keyauwee area Girl Scout Council. She served as secretary of the Town of Holden Beach Zoning board, was a board member of the Holden Beach Property owners, a charter member and was the first chairwoman of the Holden Beach Chapel Ladies Fellowship. She donated the kitchen for the Holden Beach Chapel in memory of her husband, R. Kenner Amos.
Surviving are three daughters, Laura Amos Blake of Charlotte, Kyle Amos Howington and husband Dewey of Watkinsville, GA, and Melvin Hayes Amos of Holden Beach; four grandchildren, William Kenner Blake and wife McCamy, Ashley Amos Blake Lawson and husband, Paul, Robert Justin Howington and Jamie Alexander McFalls and husband Gary; three great-grandchildren, Ethan Kenner McFalls, Elanore (Nora) Hayes Lawson and Arden Amos Blake.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery by Dr. Al Ward.
