Bernard Ruedell Shelnutt, Jr. of Ocala passed away on June 24rd 2017 in his home.

Mr. Shelnutt was born on November 18, 1927 in Lagrange, Georgia to Bernard and Ellen Shelnutt.

He proudly served his country as a US Marine during World War II and the Korean War where he served one tour in the Mediterranean.

He graduated from Auburn University with highest honors in 1955 with a Masters Degree in Education. His early career began at Wildwood High School in 1955 where he taught English and History. Teaching was truly his lifelong passion.

He quickly became the Principal of Wildwood High School. He later advanced into school administration, becoming the Sumter County general supervisor.

He was elected Sumter County clerk of court in 1980. He served three terms until his retirement in 1992. He then operated his Bushnell farm where he enjoyed raising cattle. He and his wife also greatly enjoyed traveling abroad.

In 2000 Bernard and Erlene relocated to Ocala, Florida in order to spend more time with their children and grandchildren.

Bernard is survived by his wife of 68 years, Erlene, his two children Mark Shelnutt (Linda) and Sandra Bobbitt (Brad), his grandchildren, Erin and Alex Shelnutt, Justin and Tyler Bobbitt, Lindsay, MacKenzie, & Kyndall Seek, and his brothers, John Shelnutt (Ellen), Atlanta, GA; and Tom Shelnutt, Athens, GA. He was predeceased by his sisters Dorothy Carter and Mildred Kibbie.

His wife and family have been blessed by his love, his support, and are proud of the true gentleman that he was to every person he met. His love of family, God and country were evident in every prayer he prayed, and in the life he lived.

Visitation will be held at noon on Wednesday June 28th, at Hiers Baxley Funeral Services 910 S.E. Silver springs Blvd. The Funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park, Ocala.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be directed in his memory to The Florida Baptist Children’s Homes, 1015 Sikes Blvd., Lakeland Fl. 33815. Arrangements by Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services Ocala, FL 352-629-7171
