Gloria was born in Neuenstein, Germany, the only daughter in her family. She was sent to the US at the age of 15. She came over on a ship into Ellis Island, and she stayed with her half-sister, Lina, in Massachusetts, working as a servant girl and nanny. This is how she learned to speak English.

She eventually found her way to the Jersey Shore, living in Belmar, NJ. She married and owned a business with one of her husbands...a small candy store. She desperately wanted to be a mother, and divorced one of her husbands when he refused to adopt a child. She met and married William McKinley Bullock. They were married in Miami, FL, in 1944.

A very strongwilled woman, she still wanted a child. A child born to Roberta Rasey was adopted by Gloria and her husband (who was also the birthfather of the baby).

Her harsh childhood in Germany impacted her beliefs and practices as a mother, but she did the best that she was able.
