John R. "Jack" Harrison age 91 of Zephyrhills, FL passed away on February 18, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Glenna Harrison, sons David Harrison of Orlando, Daniel (Sue) Harrison of Tampa, daughters Diane (Dan) Cartwright of Thonotosassa, Doreen Harrison of Tampa, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Born in New Jersey in 1925 to Rufus "Mac" Harrison and Irene Harrison, he left home to join the Navy in 1942. Considered a member of the "Greatest Generation," he was a proud Veteran who served as a sonar man on the Destroyer USS Laws in the Pacific during WWII.

After the war he settled in Florida and made his living teaching slide guitar. His boss at the time introduced him to a girl named Glenna and his life changed forever. They married on February 14, 1953 and had four children who they affectionately nicknamed "the Four D's." Jack then went to work for and eventually retired from the local phone company, GTE. After retiring, he and a shipmate decided to have a ship's reunion for those who had served aboard the USS Laws. They contacted friends who contacted friends and so on. They held the first ship's reunion on November 18, 1986 and there have been reunions every year since. Jack & Glenna loved to travel the country going to the reunions, which were held in different cities every year.

A dedicated member of Tampa Unity Church for over 50 years, he served as the choir director for 25 of those years. He never lost his love of music and never stopped singing.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30pm on Friday, March 3rd, at Hodges Family Funeral Home Zephyrhills. Visitation half an hour prior, at noon, and Military Honors to be rendered afterward at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
