Lumpkin served six terms in the state House of Representatives and four terms in the state Senate. He was on the review board of the North Carolina Bar Council and member of the Louisburg Bar Association. He was a former trustee of the University of North Carolina.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Louisburg Baptist Church by the Rev. Aubrey S. Thomlinson and Dr. Cecil Robbins. Entombment, Lumpkin family mausoleum in Oakwood Cemetery.
Surviving: his wife, Mrs. Edith C. Lumpkin; two daughters, Dr. Margaret Catherine Lumpkin of Corvallis, Ore., and Dr. Martha Ray Lumpkin of Falls Church, Va.; three sons, Willie Lee Jr., Willie Lee III and James Parker Lumpkin II of Louisburg; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Browning of Manilia, the Philippines, and Mrs. Eva Waters of Raleigh; a brother, George T. Lumpkin of Mineral Wells, Tex,.; a grandchild.
