Author. He a New Zealand author who rose to prominence through his stories of outdoor life in New Zealand from fiction and non-fiction stand points. In his younger days he worked deer culling jobs, providing the inspiration for his first publication "A Good Keen Man" in 1960. His story outlined the life of a deer culler in the New Zealand bush and was reprinted several times due to it's popularity. Over the following decade Crump published ten books and continued to write and publish throughout his life with his total sales grossing over a million copies. His rugged bush image and typical back country kiwi accent made him a national figure and embodiment of the "Man alone" and "typical kiwi bushman" trope. Crump's lifestyle continued to influence his writings as did his travels through Australasia and Europe. Later in life his writings were directed more towards children. Other notable works of his were "Hang on a Minute Mate" (1961), "Bullock Creek" (1989), "Gold and Greenstone" (1993) and "Wild Pork and Watercress" (1986) which was adapted into the Taika Waititi film "Hunt for the Wilderpeople." Crump He appeared in national advertisements for Toyota Hilux's, in films such as "Runaway" (1964), and he recorded music.
