Wyoming Post-Herald, Wyoming, Ill., Thursday, Sept. 26, 1889:

The quiet of last Sunday morning, September 22, 1889, at Castleton was suddenly disturbed, and the people horrified, by one of the most awful accidents that ever occurred at that place, and in this wise:
Mrs. Corilla Earhart and her daughter, Mrs. Robert Adams, and three children, went to Sunday school at 9:30 at the M. P. church and, as there was no preaching that morning, they were leisurely returning home about 11 o'clock. When they reached the railroad crossing they heard a train whistle, which proved to be a wrecking train going south at a high rate of speed, the engine going backward and at the head of the train, the tender being ahead. Mrs. Earhart evidently miscalculated the distance of the train from her, and the speed with which it was approaching, being nearsighted and wearing glasses. She started across with her granddaughter, Laura Adams, by the hand. Mrs. Mary Adams warned her that she could not get across in time, and tried to catch her dress, but Mrs. Earhart seemed to feel sure that she could, and started to cross. When nearly over, the tender struck both her and the little girl, killing both instantly. Mrs. Earhart was fearfully mangled, beyond recognition; the little girl was fatally hurt about the head, one foot amputated and some scratches on the face.
At two o'clock Monday afternoon a vast concourse of people gathered to attend the funeral services at the M. P. church, at Castleton. Two hearses conveyed the bodies to Smith cemetery, accompanied by a very long procession of carriages.
Mrs. Corilla W. Earhart was 67 years and 7 days old. She was born, so far as known at this writing, in Pennsylvania, and lived in Ohio in early life; came to Illinois is 1852, lived one year in Wyoming, and ever since at her home near Castleton. Her husband died several years ago. Two children survive her, Mr. Frank Earhart and Mrs. Mary Adams, and several grandchildren.
