"Herman Van Daam. Herman Van Daam, former owner of Van Daam's restaurants, died in a local hospital Monday at age 80. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes, with cremation in the chapel's crematory. Mr. Van Daam, who lived at 3200 SE Palmquist St., Gresham, was born May 20, 1894, in Friesland, The Netherlands, and moved to Portland 42 years ago. He is survived by his wife, Helen; six sons, Lovell, Lowell, John, Theodore and Glenn of Portland; and Herman of Lebanon; six daughters, Clara Thielade, Aileen Barnes, Jeanette Gonsalves and Nola Hulen of Portland; Gladys Lee of North Bend and Alice Ackers of Sandy; two stepdaughters, Dolores Nanninga of Pocatello, Idaho, and Margaret Svarverud of or Oregon City; 47 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren."
