Betty M. Smith, 92, was born 1924 in Frederick County, Va., the daughter of Dory C. and Georgia Smith Miller. Aunt Betty, as she was affectionately known, was welcomed into the arms of her Lord on January 11th having claimed the promise of the resurrection while under the loving care of The Willows assisted care facility and of Blue Ridge Hospice.
Betty was a lifelong member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church where she served with devotion in many capacities. She loved her church and her Lord with all her heart. She particularly loved teaching the elementary Sunday school class. Betty was a charter member of Alpha Omega Chapter 2060 of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority where she received recognition for over 60 years of service. She was employed at Shenandoah Apple Co-op and National Fruit for over 50 years and after retirement went on to volunteer for many years at the Robert E. Rose Memorial Foundation. Betty was an excellent cook and was also known for her boundless energy and positive spirit. Having not been blessed with children of her own, she became Aunt Betty to everyone she met and wore that name with pride. Aunt Betty enjoyed life and enjoyed people and she cherished sending cards to her family and friends to let them know she was thinking about them and cared about them.
Betty married Rufus P. Smith on December 16, 1942. Mr. Smith preceded her in death on June 4th, 1983. Betty is survived by her sister, Edna Melester, and her brother James Miller (Judy). She is also survived by her nephew, Rev. Steve Melester (Melanie); and nieces, Libby Wojick and Mary Vibert and many great nieces and nephews.
A service of death and resurrection will be held at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Rev. Steve Melester and Rev. Penny Pelter officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM with a reception to follow at Omps Reception Center. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Betty M. Smith may be made to Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, 1619 Cedar Grove Road, Winchester, Virginia 22603.
