Sergeant Anthony "Tony" Beminio, 38, ended his final watch on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 for the Des Moines Police Department.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, November 7, 2016, at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines.

Anthony David Beminio was born November 21, 1977, in Fort Dodge, IA, to Frank and Patricia (Sweeney) Beminio.

Tony grew up in Iowa City and attended Iowa City West where he graduated from West High School in Iowa City in 1996.
He was known as a talented athlete in high school and college.
Randy Rogers, a former assistant wrestling coach at West High, said Beminio "was a great athlete, and a great teammate with the kids, and he was a very coachable kid. … He was really a very intense athlete. All the kids liked him. He got along with everybody.”
Dan Dvorak, West High School's former assistant football coach, spent several hours each day during football season with Beminio, he said. He remembered him as an "incredible young man" who set a great example for younger students and "helped to put West High football on the map."

“There were kids that wanted to be the next Tony Beminio," Dvorak said.

Following graduation, Tony continued his education and athletic career which ended at Simpson College earning a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, and later the University of Cincinnati where he earned his Masters of Science Degree. He was remembered fondly by Lora Friedrich, his former professor of sociology at Simpson College. She said in a statement that Beminio was the first student she worked with as an adviser.

Sergeant Beminio graduated from Simpson in 2001 with a degree in criminal justice. Sergeant Beminio began his law enforcement career with the Indianola Police Department, where he worked from July 2001 to April 2005. In 2005, Tony transferred to Des Moines and was currently serving as one of the Des Moines Police Department's finest. He took a leadership role when he achieved the rank of Sergeant.

Tony also served in many areas of the department including the Metro S.T.A.R. Team. Tony was a humble man who was honored and dedicated to protect and serve the community. He also spent time as a school resource officer (SRO) at local schools, and was loved and respected by his brothers and sisters in blue.

Tony was also a devoted husband to his wife, Zoe, and wonderful father to his three children, Cameron, Haley, and Maddox. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and enjoyed deer hunting and riding his Harley Davidson. Most of all, Tony treasured time spent with Zoe, attending his children's athletic events, and being together as a family.

Tony will be deeply missed by his wife, Zoe Beminio; children: Cameron Beminio, Haley Beminio and Maddox Beminio; his parents, Patricia and Frank Beminio; sister, Krista Beminio; nieces: Jillian Eberly, Katelyn Eberly and nephew Jakoby Carolus.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents: Geneva & Francis Sweeney and paternal grandparents: Myrtle & Fauncey Beminio.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Anthony Beminio Memorial Fund at the Des Moines Police Officer's Credit Union.

Sergeant Anthony Beminio, age 38, passed away unexpectedly, while on duty, due to an unexpected "ambush-styled" shooting while sitting in his patrol car.

He served in the department's traffic unit and as a detective before switching to uniform patrol when he was promoted to sergeant last year.

A memorial was set up at Merle Hay Road and Sheridan Avenue where Sergeant Beminio was gunned down.

Sergeant Anthony Beminio and Police Officer Justin Martin, of the Urbandale Police Department, were shot and killed from ambush while sitting in their patrol cars shortly after 1:00 am.

Staff and former students at two Des Moines high schools remember Anthony "Tony" Beminio as the friendly officer who walked the halls of their schools with a smile on his face.

“It takes a special person to be a school resource officer," Roosevelt High School Principal Kevin Biggs said Wednesday afternoon.

His father, Frank Beminio, was a member of the Belmond, Iowa Police Department for 17 years before retiring in 2014. He spent his last eight years as the department's chief, Belmond Mayor Al Mattison said.
