SOUTH BEND - Joshua Keating Ackerley, 11 years old, was granted his angel wings at 11:38 am on Saturday, October 8th, 2016, following a lifelong illness. He was born on May 22, 2005 to Tracey (Pawlik) Ackerley and William Edward Ackerley. Joshua's final days were spent in his home in South Bend, surrounded by family and friends that Joshua touched in some way throughout his short, yet memorable life.

Joshua's short 11 years here on Earth proved to be very fulfilling to many. His contagious smile could warm the hardest of hearts. Joshua loved being startled and kissed. He would give the biggest smile that made you want to hold him forever. Joshua loved listening to music and listening to his brothers play in the room. Joshua was known as a friend to ALL animals, both domestic and wild and invited and uninvited, especially his angel dog, Ironwood and his Earthly dog, Boodah.

While Joshua may have appeared to be physically weak, he had amazing perseverance and strength to overcome incredible odds and challenges. His daily struggles with his little body taught lessons to doctors and nurses throughout his entire life. His courage is a lesson to all of us to never give up, even when the odds are against us. All Joshua knew how to do was love with his whole being, and that was evident to any person lucky enough to have met him.

Joshua's life is to be celebrated. We should look at his life as a lesson to take the time to love, smile, and praise God. He will forever remain in our hearts. We feel so blessed that he chose us to be his parents.

Joshua leaves behind many doctors, therapists, aides, and nurses that provided love and support to enhance his quality of life. Joshua's love and the family's thanks is especially given to his wonderful nurses, Jen Carapia, Margaret Gillis-Stough, and Angie Straughn, his lifetime home nurses.

Joshua is survived by his parents, Tracey Ackerley of Mishawaka and Ed Ackerley of South Bend; his older brother, Tyler E. Ackerley at home; and his twin brother, Jacob W. Ackerley, also at home. Additionally, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Wally & Debby Pawlik of Carpentersville, IL and paternal grandparents, Keating & Mary Jane Ackerley of Tucson, AZ; paternal great-grandfather, Eugene Ackerley of Tucson, AZ; Aunt Vicky & Dave Blust, and their children, Nathan & Noah, all of Northlake, IL; and Uncle Chris & Melissa Ackerley, and their children, Evan & Ella, all of Sahuarita, AZ.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Thursday, October 13, 2016 in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 4508 Vistula Road, Mishawaka, IN. Friends may visit with the family from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend and from 11:00-12:00 on Thursday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Joshua may be donated to A Rosie Place, 53131 Quince Road, South Bend, IN 46628.
