Dr. Munir Haque Abbasy, 55, of this town, chief of the division of neurosurgery at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, died Sunday at Bridgeport Hospital, Bridgeport, Conn., from injuries sustained after his private plane crashed.

The plane which he piloted crashed into a building near Barnes Municipal Airport Saturday. The accident is under investigation.

He held his chief position at Baystate since 1993 and held the same position at Mercy Hospital (now Mercy Medical Center) in Springfield from 1988 to 1993. He also was practicing neurosurgeon at the Neurosurgical & Neurological Group Inc. of Springfield.

Born in Khairpur Mirs, Pakistan, he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Liaquat Medical College in Pakistan. He began his internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, followed by his residency at Northwestern University Medical Center, Chicago. He completed his residency in neurological surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. He is licensed in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois.

He was the assistant clinical professor in the department of neurosurgery at Tufts University in Boston. He was widely published.

He was a member of the Hampden District Medical Society, the New England Neurosurgical Society, the Massachusetts Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Pediatric Section of AANS/CNS, the Massachusetts Neurosurgical Society and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

He was a director of the Longmeadow Montessori School.

He leaves his wife, the former Ann O'Connor; a son, Jamil, a daughter, Shareen Abbasy, and their mother, Diana (Communale) Abbasy, all of Longmeadow; four brothers, Iftkhar of Oakbrook, Ill., and Saleem, Nazer, and Sami, and a sister, Iqbal, all of Pakistan.

The funeral will be Monday evening at the Islamic Society of Western Massachusetts in West Springfield, with burial in the Islamic Center Cemetery, Enfield, Conn. Harrell Funeral Homen of Springfield is in charge.
