OBITUARY:
Mr. John Sharpe Hartsell
CONCORD - Mr. John Sharpe Hartsell, 97, 7434 U.S. 601 S., died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Mr. Hartsell was born Feb. 14, 1907, in Cabarrus County to the late Bessie Jeanette Boger Hartsell and the late Robert Lee Hartsell. Mr. Hartsell was an attorney-at-law and served in the U.S. Army in World War II.
The funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Pauls United Methodist Church, 4877 N.C. 200, Concord. The Rev. Charles Davis and the Rev. Albert Joyner will officiate. Burial will be at St. Martin Lutheran Church Cemetery, Concord.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home, 460 Branchview Drive, Concord, NC.
He was a graduate of Bethel High School, Davidson College and Duke University Law School. He practiced law with the Hartsell & Hartsell law firm for 60 years in Concord. A member of the N.C. Bar Association, Mr. Hartsell is the former chairman of the Cabarrus County Board of Elections in Concord. He was a member of the Concord Rotary Club, the Cabarrus County Boys and Girls Club, the Cabarrus County Geneology Association and the Gold History Corp. (Reed Gold Mine). He was also a member of Historic Cabarrus Inc. The Concord Tribune, in it's 1900 to 2000 one hundred most influential citizens of the century special edition, called Mr. Hartsell "the person most knowledgeable of the history and families of Cabarrus County, having done a great deal of research into the history of Cabarrus County." In 1997, John Sharpe received the first Cabarrus County Bar Association Liberty Bell Award presented by the N.C. State Bar Association. Mr. Hartsell was an investigator in the 420th Counter Intelligence Corps detachment of the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. His decoration included the EAMET Campaign with four Bronze Service Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. military service in 1945.
Mr. Hartsell was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee Hartsell and Bessie Jeanette Boger Hartsell, and seven brothers and sisters.
He is survived by one sister, Rosalyn Hartsell Greene.
The family will meet at the home of his sister, Rosalyn Greene, 4301 Joyner Road, Concord.
