Lizzy was born in Kansas to Cornelius Causland and Rebecca Ward. The 1900 census has Cornelius in Silver City, New Mexico working with the railroad shipping millions of dollars worth of silver by rail. Lizzy married Simon Frank Chavez sometime between 1900 and 1905. They had 10 children. The family eventually followed the railroad west to Yermo, San Bernardino, California.
