Vivian Yvonne Glasscock
December 16, 1943 - June 11, 2016
Vivian Yvonne Glasscock, age 72, passed away the morning of June 11, 2016 after a long and hard battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 49 years: Truman Gregory Glasscock, Jr.; One son: Truman Gregory (Greg) Glasscock, III (Mary); Two grandchildren; Moira Jayne Glasscock and Kassandra Paige Glasscock; Two sisters: Carolyn Garrison and Neoma Sullins; and one brother Neito Garrison.

Vivian Yvonne Glasscock was born in Decatur Alabama, December 16, 1943, the oldest child to Homer Lyle and Verdie Belle Cryer Garrison. She was reared in rural Morgan County and attended schools at Cotaco and Priceville, with a brief stint at Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Her family was poor, but they got by without accepting charity. As a result, she and all her siblings developed a strong work ethic.

She met her husband to be, Truman Gregory Glasscock, Jr., at the Blue Circle Drive-In in Decatur. After a whirlwind romance they were married in the Morgan County Courthouse by Judge T C. Almon. They had one son, Truman Gregory (Greg) Glasscock, III. During their marriage they lived in 14 houses in Decatur; Huntsville; Madison; Nashville, TN; Chico, CA; and Reno, NV. Besides being with her family, Vivian loved doing her job, whatever it was, and art. She was an accomplished artist. She participated in several art shows and painted scenes for all the recent Glasscock Christmas cards. Vivian liked to travel and always took a lot of pictures, not the usual touristy type, but pictures she thought would make good paintings.

One of her early jobs was maintaining the filing system for tracking photographs in the NASA Photo Lab, where she met Werner Von Braun. She performed secretarial and administrative duties at several company levels, including secretary to three company presidents. For one small government contractor, she was the company secretary and the company security officer. When computers arrived on the work scene, it was as if they were made for the way she thought. She loved playing with the new computers and figuring out ways to simplify routine tasks using the computer. She set up and maintained the first Macintosh computer network for the executive area of Teledyne Brown. She assisted other employees in computer usage and taught several after-hours classes for executive secretaries in the use of drawing, word processing, and presentation software. She became a real wizard with the Filemaker program and converted many company forms to Filemaker format amazing her co-workers that she could find things so easily. She always did more than was expected of her on any job.

When the grandchildren (Moira and Kassie) came along, they became her heart and joy. She loved playing games or doing arts and crafts with her grandchildren. Although she never cared much for sports, she got great pleasure out of watching the girls playing soccer.

Vivian regretted not getting her college degree, thinking it might have opened some more doors. Most of the people she encountered in her professional environment didn’t realize she didn’t have one. She did all right for a little country girl.

A visitation service will be held in her honor at Peck Funeral Home, Hartselle, AL., from 2:00 to 3:00 PM, Saturday, June 18, 2016.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to Hospice of the Valley or to the charity of your choice in Vivian’s name.
