Mickey Cates Abbott, age 88, passed away Friday May 27 2016 in Plano TX. Mickey Jo was born in Quanah TX March 2, 1928 to Oliver Andrew Cates and Lelia Cox Cates. She was predeceased by her husband James Abbott and brothers Larry Carr and Tommy Cates. Left to cherish her memory are daughter Sandra Abbott; son Mark Abbott; granddaughter Brooke Abbott and sister-in-law Gina Cates of Plano. The family will receive friends Friday, June 3, 2016 from 10:00am until 11:30am at Brown's Memorial Funeral Home. A committal service will be held 1:15pm Friday June 3, 2016 at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211. All attending should arrive in Lane B by 1:00 pm. Mickey always saw beauty, she loved life and people, and people loved her. She graduated Sunset High School 1945 and SMU in 1949 in Fashion and Costume Design. She and Jim Abbott met at SMU and their June 16, 1951 wedding was the first in the SMU Perkins Chapel and was officiated by SMU President Umphrey Lee. Mickey worked at Tiches (Dallas) and D.H. Holmes (New Orleans) department stores as a buyer and in the Development Office of the New Orleans Museum of Art. Mickey served as president of New Orleans Lettering Arts Calligraphy Association, Lake Terrace Gardening Club and the UNO Women's Club. Mickey had fond memories of New Orleans, summers in Alamogordo, NM, a sabbatical in Taiwan and butterflying with the North American Butterfly Association.
