He married Catherine Donnithorne, daughter of Edward Trenwith Donnithorne and Catherine nee Pooley, on 15 October 1865, at Phillack, Cornwall. The couple had five sons and one daughter.
The family emigrated to Australia on the "Trevelyan" in 1866, with brothers Thomas and Joseph Michell.
Michell Australia Pty Ltd: George Henry Michell and his four sons joined the wool stripping carding and combing business in 1870.
He died on 02 February 1918 at Hindmarsh, South Australia.
"Mr. G. H. Michell, one of the oldest
identities of the wool trade, died on Feb-
ruary 2 at his residence, 'Stoneleigh,'
Hindmarsh. Mr. Michell came to South
Australia from Hayle, Cornwall, with his
wife by the sailing vessel Trevelyan, and
he reached Adelaide on March 21, 1866.
After a short residence in and around
Adelaide he settled at Mundalya, where
he made a start in the wool business by
buying small lots from the farmers around
the district, and scouring on the River
Wakefield. It is interesting to notice how
from small beginnings big things are
raised. Probably little did Mr. Michell
think when he began his operations then
that he was laying the foundation of the
largest wool-scouring establishment in
South Australia, and which compare
favorably with the largest in Australia.
After some years of experience in the
country it became evident that if the busi-
ness was to grow, he must get nearer
the city, and in 1889 he opened his works
in Hindmarsh, where the business has
been carried on ever since. In his prime
there was no man better known in the
trade than Mr. Michell. Although of a
quiet, unassuming disposition, he was held
in high esteem by every section of the
trade."
