Steven was living with his mother in Springfield, when he enlisted in the US Army 4 April 1966, a couple of days before his 18th birthday. Arriving in Vietnam 18 January 1967, Steven was assigned to A Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade, USARV.
The battalion was participating in Operation Junction City I, when they were engaged by a large hostile force 4 kilometers north northwest of the Katum Airfield. Steven died as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to the body from a hostile grenade. The Army lost 20 soldiers during the intense fighting.
Survived by his step-father and mother, Ira and Alice M Grabill Jr, his 3 brothers; Michael A, John, Daren S and sister; Sally, all of 421 Reams Street, Springfield, Ohio.
