Mrs. M. J. Tennent Has Passed Away
Mrs. Mary Julia Tennent died yesterday at noon at her home, 111 Montford avenue. The funeral services will take place this afternoon at half past four o'clock at Oak Forest Presbyterian church near Acton and will be conducted by Dr. R. F. Campbell, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. The pall bearers will be Judge H. B. Stevens, A. V. Jones, Edward Dukes, Owen Smith, Owen Gudger and G. H. Wright. The interment will be in the family cemetery at the church grounds.
The death of Mrs. Tennent came as a great shock to a great portion of the community and to many in this and other states to whom she was very dear, but especially to the older residents who have known and loved her for so many years.
Mrs. Tennent was Miss Mary Julia Fripp. She was born November 1827 in Charleston and her early life was spent on the islands of Edisto and St. John where the family had extensive plantations. She was married in 1844 to Dr. C. Tennent who died 25 years ago. Prior to 1855 Dr. and Mrs. Tennent removed to Asheville and built Edgehill as a summer home. This residence was afterwards occupied by Major Hunt until it was burned several years ago. Asheville and vicinity has been Mrs. Tennent's permanent home since 1868 and her residence has been 111 Montford avenue since 1888.
Mrs. Tennent had ten children, nine of whom are now living.
Mrs. Tennent has been ill for many months and has been confined to her room for six months and so her death was expected. During her long illness she was in posession of her mental faculties until three days prior to her death.
