Company D
31st Maine Infantry
Union Army
CIVIL WAR
As "Washington Abbott" (as he was known much of his life) he served from 22 Feb 1864 to 15 Jul 1865.
He married Sarah C. Rich on 7 Nov 1868. She was born in Hancock County, ME, in Oct 1850. She registered their marriage in Waupaca County after his death (probably to support her application for a widow's pension); but the location of the marriage was not recorded. It's likely they were married in Hancock County, ME, as they both grew up there.
They had at least 6 children (all sons): Harry (b. 1870), Morris (b.1874), Ernest (b. 1875), Alvin (1879), Archie (b. 1879) and Earl (b.1881).
Sarah moved to Minnesota and then North Dakota, always living with one of her children and their families along the way. She did not remarry. From her pension record, we know that she died on 1 Mar 1924, but the location of her death and burial are (so far) not known. In 1920, she was living in Williston, ND, with Alvin and his family.
According to his death record, he died in the Town of Helvetia, Waupaca County, WI. He was 41 years old and a farmer. His parents were Joshua and Mary Jane Abbott.
