Lenora "Nora" was the daughter of Thomas Edgar & Luella (Johnson) Hanna. She was born either in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County or Winchester, Guernsey County, Ohio. She married Neil Adair Thornton on 20 Sept 1911 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. They had 12 children, but only 4 survived to adulthood.

She was short in stature, standing at 4'11". She told people that she had "indian" in her. She displayed this by wearing her "war paint" (makeup). Native ancestry has not been proven.
