Frank Peck, USAF Retiree, School Aide
LONG BEACH - Frank Peck, a Jordan High School alumnus who returned to his alma mater as a popular staff assistant, died Sunday after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 61.

Although born in Pennsylvania, Frank moved to San Pedro with his parents, Frank Joseph and Mary Agnus (Norton) Peck, in the 1930's and moved to Janice Street in North Long Beach during World War II. He went to Grant Elementary, Lindbergh Junior High and Jordan High School, where he lettered in football and baseball. He graduated from Jordan in 1950.

He passed on college and went straight into the Air Force, which he turned into a 20-year career. He retired as a master sergeant in 1971 and went to work for the Long Beach School District.

He started with the district as a gardener, then worked as a custodian, then as a custodian supervisor.

And that's the job that took him to Avalon School on Catalina Island for seven year, and that's where he met his second wife, Patricia, then a second-grade teacher at Avalon. They were married 14 years.

Always interested in athletics - for himself and as a spectator - Frank took up running when he turned 50 and loved running all over Catalina. He even ran a marathon.

At Jordan, he had a wonderful way with both student and staff. He never missed a Jordan game and knew all the kids by name.

When he became ill with cancer and knew he hadn't long to live, he told people at the school he wished he could go back east to visit his grown children. The students collected upwards of $300, and the staff close to $1,000 to help finance his trip

In addition to Patricia, Frank is survived by his first wife, Barbara Mogk Peck, sons Jeff, Jim, Joe and Jason, daughter Jennie Uffner, stepdaughters Karen Lenoski and Kris Lundquist, stepson Charles Lundquist, brother Bob and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service was held 9am Wednesday at Westminister Memorial Park, 14801 Beach Blvd., Westminster.
