Edward Gustavus Struxness, 88, a resident of Clarkston, Mich., and a former resident of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, in Michigan.

Born December 26, 1913, in Nome, North Dakota, he was a graduate of Luther College and did graduate work at both Northwestern University and the University of Tennessee.

Mr. Struxness was a retired associate director of the Environmental Science Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Among his professional titles during his work in Oak Ridge, he had also been director of the Environmental Assessments Project and assistant director of the Health Physics Division at ORNL and superintendent of the Health Physics Department at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.

He was formerly a science teacher in secondary schools in Minnesota and a senior instructor in the Inspection Division with the United States Army Air Force Technical Training Command in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mr. Struxness received his certification in health physics from the American Board of Health Physics. He was recipient in 1975 of the American Nuclear Society's Special Award for Waste Disposal and Waste Management.

His numerous professional memberships included the Health Physics Society of America, East Tennessee Chapter of the Health Physics Society, the International Radiation Protection Association and the American Nuclear Society.

He was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge. In earlier years, Mr. Struxness was a member and chairman of the Advisory Board for the Development and Utilization of Human Resources for the city of Oak Ridge; a member of the board of directors of the Anderson County Community Action Commission in Clinton; a member of the Advisory Board of the Morgan-Scott Project for Cooperative Christian Concerns, in Deer Lodge; and coordinator of Social Ministry, Southeastern Synod of LCA, Atlanta, Georgia.

Mr. Struxness is survived by his wife of 61 years, Thelma Struxness; his daughter, Karen Teberian and her husband, Minas, of Clarkston; and his son, Paul Struxness and his wife, Randi, of Missouri.

His survivors also include four sisters, Freda Jacobsen of Iowa, Irene Sawatzky and Solveig Korot, both of Arizona, and Ruth Storvick of Minnesota; and seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Struxness was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held at noon Sunday, April 28, at Pine Hill Congregational Church, West Bloomfield, Mich.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to Grace Lutheran Church, 131 W. Gettysburg Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830; or Hospice of Michigan.
