Mariah Jane "Jennie" Hatt, was born on 23 December 1850, in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio to John Hatt and Martha Runyan Hatt.
There were three siblings in the family: Joseph H., Alexander R. and Mariah Jane Hatt. Their father John, died in 1854 and their mother Martha married Joseph Hughes.

The ten were Martha M., Elmer Walter, William G., Frank Alexander, Twins, Mary Ann (Barton), Myrtle Almira "Myrtie" (Myers, Retherford), Carrie Zilpha (Merriman) and Rachel Belle Parisho. The five died as infants were Martha M., William, Twins, and Rachel Belle.
