PTA Leader Frances Gordy Dies at 89

A Columbus woman long active in Georgia educational circles, Francis Josephine Gordy, 89, died Wednesday at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, with entombment at Chapel of the Pines Mausoleum in Parkhill Cemetery.
Mrs. Gordy, of 1529 Hilton Ave., had been a trustee of LaGrange College since 1958. She was president of Georgia Congress of Parents and Teachers (PTA) from 1938-1940 and was an honorary life state president. In 1978, she was one of five Merit Mothers of Georgia.
After the 1974 death of her husband, James S. Gordy, Mrs. Gordy continued to operate their Gordy Realty Co., in the Empire Building at 19-1/2 12th St.
She was born Dec. 21. 1894, in Alexander City, Ala., a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Simeon H. DeLoach, but was reared in Ellerslie, Ga., by Mr. and Mrs. Stephen T. Ellison. She attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville.
She was active in the Gleaners Sunday School class at St. Luke United Methodist Church, Salvation Army Auxiliary, Wynnton Study Club and Columbus chapter of the Daughters of American Colonists. She was a life member of Muscogee Education Association, an honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma and a member of the Christian Fellowship Association. She was past regent of the Button Gwinnett chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include a son, retired Col. Stephen E. Gordy, Fairfax, Va., two daughters, Frances Wroton of Columbus and Mary MCMurria of Bradenton, Fla.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family asks donations to a favorite charity in lieu of flowers
