The son of David C. & Anna (Shoff) Cocklin, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living in or near Upper Allen Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, where he is found in the 1850 census, although he is not found in the 1860 census.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Cumberland County August 29, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 7 as a private with Co. C, 84th Pennsylvania Infantry. The reason for the delay between enlistment and muster-in is as yet unknown. On January 13, 1865, he transferred to Co. K, 57th Pennsylvania Infantry, to complete his term of service and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.
He married Anna Myers and fathered Christian Myers (b. 09/10/69). In 1870, he was living with his family in York, York County, where he died at his home on South Newberry Street.
